Sometimes, watching those horror movie scenes can get too intense for some of us. But, we still want to participate in some kind of Halloween fun. For those who aren’t fans of scary movies, there are plenty of alternative options to choose from and binge-watch them. We’ve gathered 10 movies that are ideal without those unexpected jumpscares and gore.

Beetlejuice

The premise of this movie is based on a couple who lost their lives in a car accident. Once they reach the afterlife, the couple, Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) find themselves stuck in their residence. Their house is then inhabited by a couple, the Deetzes (Catherine O’Hara, Jeffrey Jones) and their teen daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder). To lure them out of their residence, the deceased couple attracts Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a spirit who works to scare away the Deetzes. For those who have watched this classic film, there is a sequel in the works set to release in 2024.

Casper

Fear not about this film’s protagonist, Casper, he may be a ghost but he is the friendliest ghost of them all! The movie’s plot follows Casper (Malachi Pearson) whose soul is running amock in a mansion. To communicate with Casper, specialist James Harvey (Bill Pullman) is hired to communicate with Casper and his fellow spirits. James brings along his daughter, Kat (Christina Ricci) and Casper falls in love with her. The relationship is rather complicated but the premise of the film gives a feel-good kind of vibe.

Coraline

The animation of this movie is definitely top-tier and may or may not creep you out a bit (no gore involved). Coraline was released back in 2009 and starred Dakota Fanning as the leading character, Coraline. The story follows young Coraline as she moves into a new apartment with her parents. But, to her surprise, she discovers a door to an alternative world — that seems like a utopian universe but sinister motives lie within it.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

There’s no movie marathon without a little bit of Disney thrown into the mix. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a classic film and one of Director Tim Burton’s memorable works. You will definitely be finding yourself singing along to the signature songs, This is Halloween. The leading protagonist, Jack Skellington is known as the Pumpkin King of Halloweentown, however, he becomes rather tired of the same annual routine of “scaring” in the real world during the time of Halloween. He stumbles upon a new world, Christmastown, and begins plotting how to take control.

Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus, another Disney film released in 1993, follows the story of three Salem witches who were brought into the present time by Max, his sister, and his friend, Allison. The witches, Winifred, Sarah, and Mary, are mischievous and far from being innocent. Their end objective is to become immortal but Max and his entourage work together to stop them by stealing the witches’ spell book. Following this first film, you should definitely give the sequel, Hocus Pocus 2 a watch as well.

Corpse Bride

Another work from the mind of Director Tim Burton, Corpse Bride follows the story of a young groom-to-be, Victor. He is planning to get married to Victoria, whom he is smitten with — although their marriage is arranged. Victor is rather timid and nervous about the event and practices his vows in a forest to prepare. As Victor is in the forest, a tree branch becomes a “hand” which belongs to Emily, the “Corpse Bride.” Victor is brought to the land of the “dead” and Emily becomes infatuated with him. She wants to marry him and Victor begins to look for ways to get back to the “real” world and marry Victoria before it’s too late.

The Addams Family

If you have seen the Netflix series, Wednesday, the movie may or may not be recognizable. The Addams Family follows when a man named Fester shows up at The Addams’ residence claiming to be Gomez’s (the father) brother. Gomez’s wife, Morticia begins to suspect that the whole manner seems to be odd. However, Fester grows close to the family’s children, Wednesday and Pugsley Addams. Fester works with a lawyer, Tully Alford, to lure away The Addams from their residence. Gomez then begins to realize that Fester is out for the family’s fortune, works to challenge him, and save his family from doom.

Halloweentown

 

Halloweentown is about Marnie Piper, a young girl who discovers that her family line consists of witches. On Halloween night, Marnie’s grandmother comes to visit and reveals the family’s true identity. The grandmother takes Marnie and her siblings to Halloweentown, where it’s a world that supernatural forces like witches live in. However, Halloweentown is being threatened by an evil force so Marnie works with her grandmother to stop evil from taking control.

Edward Scissorhands

With a star-studded cast featuring Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder, this film will for sure have your heart. Another Tim Burton-directed film, Edward Scissorhands follows the story of Edward, an artificial man with scissors for hands, created by an inventor who passed away before he could finish Edward’s human appearance. He is discovered by Avon saleswoman, Peg and she brings him back to her neighborhood, where his unique abilities are initially embraced. However, Edward is then faced with backlash after misunderstandings arise.

Ghostbusters

Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters! This film follows a plot surrounding three men who begin their paranormal investigation and elimination service in New York City. The Ghostbusters crew creates unique technology for capturing ghosts. Their services begin to grow in demand as the city is faced with an overwhelm of supernatural beings. They then recruit a fourth member and receptionist, as they all work together to fight evil from the Gozer, his minions, and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.
